Barolo Bricco Rocche DOCG 2013 Ceretto

The winemaking team at Ceretto should be proud of these results. The 2013 Barolo Bricco Rocche is a complete and centered wine with depth, harmony and enticing complexity. You immediately notice the tension and energy in this wine. It is buzzing with youthful character but it also has the solid tannic structure and the balanced acidity to carry it forward over the years. The Castiglione Falletto township, where the Bricco Rocche vineyard is located, has performed beautifully across the board in this classic vintage.

Ceretto farms a total of 130 hectares. The entire property is farmed organically and 60 hectares are also biodynamic. Ceretto makes wines in both the Barbaresco and the Barolo appellations and this puts them in a good position to judge the difficult 2014 season from both perspectives. They join in a chorus of voices telling me that 2014 was fine in Barbaresco but considerably more difficult in nearby Barolo. In fact, the Barolo single-vineyard expressions will not be produced in 2014.

Lots of ripe fruit here, yet this is fresh and aromatic, not to mention focused. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. The texture and beauty are exceptional. Try in 2022.

A spicy expression introduces this intense, tight red, with cherry and currant fruit augmented by white pepper, mineral, tobacco and tar flavors. Complex and long, with a tension that will take years to unwind. Terrific length. Best from 2023 through 2045. 330 cases made.

The 2013 Barolo Bricco Rocche is the most expressive of the Ceretto single vineyard Barolos at this stage. Pliant, supple and quite giving, the 2013 is tempting to drink early, but it really needs time to be at its very best. Silky, polished tannins add raciness in this beautifully layered, exquisite Barolo from Ceretto.
